城巴於二零二六年七月十五日，獲得運輸署批出一個自動駕駛車輛先導牌照，穿梭行走往返香港科學園及大學站之間作測試，相關牌照有效期由二零二六年七月二十二日開始，直到二零二九年五月三十一日為止。在整個測試期間，有關車輛未能以取酬方式接載乘客以及作出租之用，同時車上必須安排後備操作員監察測試車輛及其周邊情況，以在必要時能夠立即全面或局部接管車輛操控操控，避免意外發生。另外，當駕駛車停止以自動模式操作時，該操作員將以手動操作該車。
城巴用作測試自動駕駛車輛，是兩架來自廈門的金旅客車製造的XML6608JEVJ0C1電動小巴，兩車被編為AV1及AV2，並未有作任何登記領牌，全車載客量為十二個座位，不設企位。城巴是次測試無人駕駛電動小巴，並非香港首款無人駕駛電動小巴，冠忠早於二零二四年八月下旬至翌年七月，曾經於錦綉花園範圍內測試兩架由安凱生產的HFF6668GEV1電動小巴，有興趣的錦綉花園居民更可預先登記後試乘無人駕駛小巴。冠忠隨後於二零二五年十月開始，引進兩架金龍XMQ6750BGWBEV無人駕駛自動小巴於西九文化區作測試，有別於在錦綉花園項目，是次測試並不允許一般公眾試搭。另外，機場管理局亦於二零二五年引入一批分別由比亞迪及開沃生產的無人駕駛電動小巴作測試用途，用於機場停機坪禁區內接載員工及地勤工程人員之用。
城巴無人駕駛巴士試驗項目自二零二六年八月開始，每日早上九時開始至晚上六時，以及晚上七時至翌日清五時川行科學園至大學站之間，包括車長在內共有三名職員隨車進行測試，以收集數據及應付突發情況。金旅XML6608JEVJ0C1無人駕駛電動小巴除了用於上述城巴測試項目外，亦將應用於往返港珠澳大橋香港口岸及連接香港國際機場航天城的「航天走廊」無人駕駛公共運輸系統，有關系統預計於二零二六至二七年投入服務。
CTB was awarded an autonomous vehicles (AV) pilot license on 15 Jul., 2026 for evaluated a autonomous private light bus operating between HK Science Park and University Station. The validity of the AV pilot license was effective from 22 Jul., 2026 and ended 31 May 2029.The license required an in-vehicle backup operator to monitor the AV and its surrounding with a view to, if necessary, wholly or partially taking control of the AV by overriding the AV system and manually operate the AV when autonomous mode was ceased to operation. In addition, no paid passengers can be carried by the AV during the evaluation period.
The AV model that CTB evaluated was 12-seated Golden Dragon XML6608JECJ0C1 electric minibus from Xiamen, China and classed as AV1 and AV2 without any registration. Golden Dragon XML6608JECJ0C1 was not the first of the type in Hong Kong and backed to 2024, Kwoon Chung Motors first evaluated a pair of Ankai HFF6668GEV1 autonomous electric minibus within Fairview Park and trial ride was offered to the appointed residents. Kwoon Chung further introduced a batch of 2 Kinglong XMQ6750BGWBEV autonomous electric minibus for evaluation within West Kowloon Cultural District but no passengers were allowed to onboard. Airport Authority Hong Kong also acquired autonomous electric minibus from BYD and SUNWIN on staff ferry service for evaluation in the ramp area in 2025.
The evaluation carried out by CTB was started from Aug., 2026 and running between HK Science Park and University Station daily from 9am to 6pm and 7pm to 5am. 3 staff including a bus captain were onboard for data collection and taking control during emergency. Golden Dragon XML6608JECJ0C1 will also be used on autonomous mass transportation system for carrying visitors between the Hong Kong Port of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge and SKYCITY at Hong Kong International Airport which expected to be operated in 2026 to 2027.
