都城嘉慕都城型 Metro Cammell Weymann Metrobus

八十年代對九巴而言是一個充滿發展機遇的年代,大量新巴士加入車隊替換五、六十年代投入服務的成員,其中英國都城嘉慕在一九八一年提供三架十二米三軸版本超級都城型予九巴試用後,雖然未有進一步取得相關訂單,但卻在翌年成功從九巴手上,奪得兩軸版都城型巴士新車合約。九巴是次購入的都城型跟早前接收的三軸樣板車一樣屬於第二型版本,外觀上與中巴早年引入的都城型第一型有顯著分別,首先九巴的都城型擁有更大面積的上層擋風玻璃,至於下層源自都城大都會型的高低級擋風玻璃設計,則未有再出現這款Apollo二型車身上。至於車尾設計亦有作出修改,包括採用了較大的上層車尾太平門及下層車尾窗,以及選用常見的白色倒車燈,取代了出現於都城型一型的「REVERSING」黑底紅字倒車提示燈箱。

首批都城型新車合共有二十架並於一九八三年年中陸續投入服務,機械配搭完全滿足當年九巴要求,採用吉拿6LXB引擎搭配福伊特DIWA 851全自動波箱,在投入服務初期主要被派往行走過海隧道線。九巴其後於同年增購十架都城型新車並於一九八四年九月作首次登記並投入服務,機械配搭跟首批都城型如出一轍,只是玻璃車窗由淺藍色改成透明。隨後九巴再於一九八四年五月向都城嘉慕招手,訂購第三批為數三十架都城型新車,並再於翌年加訂多二十架新車,全數五十架新車於一九八五年四月至十一月之間登記出牌,除了過海隧道路線105及170獲安排新車外,市區路線12A,40及屯門區內線59亦有它們的身影。這五十架新車採用較大的車頭路線牌箱,進一步改善車子外觀,而玻璃車窗亦恢復了淺藍色設計。至於機械配搭方面,主要仍然以吉拿引擎為主,但當中有三架新車(M58-60)則試驗裝配美國康明斯製造的大馬力L10引擎,並全數安排行走往返慈雲山及藍田的15A以作測試,成為本港首批採用康明斯引擎之專利巴士,同時這三架都城型只有十九個企位,較其他同門兄弟少一人。

因應原先行走往返錦田及荃灣碼頭,途經荃錦公路的51路線上的亞比安55型單層巴士到達退役之齡,以及進一步滿足沿線居民出行需求,九巴開始探討使用雙層巴士行走51線之可能性,適逄一架十一米都城嘉慕超級都城型空調樣板車(DP1932)試驗失敗,於是九巴便將原先其身上的吉拿6LXDT引擎,安裝在M21(DC9306)上作為試驗。經過一輪測試之後,九巴最終在一九八八年三月十八日安排M21行走51線,成為服務該線首架雙層巴士,隨後為應付途經陡斜路面的將軍澳新市鎮路線及51線需要,九巴向都城嘉慕發出包括八架兩軸版本的都城型新車訂單。一如同期的三軸都城型新車,M81-88配備了馬力達二百八十匹的康明斯LTA10引擎,傳動系統為福伊特Voith DIWA 864G全自動波箱,並配備手動減速器進一步提升行車安全。在外觀上這批為數八架都城型新車,除配備了通風系統外,全數車窗均為淺啡色玻璃窗,亦是九巴車隊中唯一配淺啡色玻璃窗兩軸車型。在完成九巴這批新車及來自九鐵巴士部訂單後,都城嘉慕便因財政問題結業,標誌這批新車為最後一批在港投入服務的都城型。M81-88於一九八九年十二月五日開始,聯同加裝手動減速器的M21一拼取代原先行走51線的亞比安,而出於安全考慮,所有行走51線都城型下層企位限額調整至只有三名。

好景不常,面對不斷上上落落以及多彎的荃錦公路,加上長期超載環境以及來自強大馬力康明斯引擎的負荷,致使M81-88底盤出現問題而要被逼從51線退下,並且改配早期都城型巴士的機械配搭行走一般路線。同一時間九巴依樣葫蘆地改裝較早期的都城型,然後安排上山行走51線。不過在路面環境未有作出改變下,經改裝的都城型巴士同樣出現損耗而要退岀51線,這個情況一直等到51改作全空調服務時才告終。

隨著更多大型三軸巴士投入服務,兩軸版都城型漸次退出過海隧道路線及其他高客量路線,轉而行走路面有所限制的路線,而都城型巴士曾行走的九巴路線計有2C,5C,7B,8,10,11X,18,29M,30,31,31M,45,46及77K等等,當中部份曾改裝作行走51線的都城型巴士,從51退下來仍然保留有關機械配搭,並行走53,64K及70線。首部退下火線的都城型是M59(DF4437),遭到祝融眷顧無法修復而於一九九一年退役,隨後M58(DF3520),M77(DH921)及M85(EH5919)因長期行走51線導致底盤出現問題,而先後於一九九六年及九七年提早退役,而M11(CZ3920)則因交通意外傷及底盤而於一九九七年退役。另外,M15(CZ5944)於一九九七年被挑選改作訓練巴士,成為除早年的十二米三軸版都城型外,九巴車長訓練學校唯一一架都城嘉慕都城城型,M15最終於二零零一年完成訓練車長的使命,退役之後被出售拆毀。

其他都城嘉慕都城型則自二零零零年開始漸次退役,而排在隊末的七架都城型則留守到最後,退役前主要服務29M,94,96R及99,當三條行走西貢區的路線於二零零三年五月改成全空調服務後,除了一架用作行走29M外,餘下的都城型便被投閒置散,最終29M亦於同年八月三十日以全空調巴士行走後,九巴網絡內再沒有路線必需採用兩軸版本都城型。隨後九月一至四日開學日日子期間,在M83,84及86行走過11C,16及95等線加班車後,正式從車隊名冊上除名。九巴的都城型巴士除了M2(CZ1014)在退役之後,在將軍澳車廠用作貨倉外,其他都被出售拆毀,而隨著將軍澳車廠於二零一三年被收回發展後,有指M2得到私人保留並拖離車廠收藏。

The 1980s was the golden age for KMB with many new buses were ordered to replace those commissioned in the 1950s and 60s. Among the new buses acquired, MCW supplied a total of 3 Super Metrobus 12m to KMB for evaluation in 1981, though no more further order was made, MCW still successfully gained purchasing order from KMB for the 2-axle variants. Compared to the Metrobus acquired by CMB in 1978, all KMB Metrobus was fitted with the MCW Apollo Mk 2 bodyworks instead of the Mk 1 for CMB. This can be distinguished easily from the symmetrical two-piece windscreen applied on the KMB examples together with a larger upper deck front window. In addition, not only larger window fitted at the both upper and lower decks rear windows on the KMB MCW Metrobus, but also the using of the white reversing lights rather than a "REVERSING" light box on the Metrobus Mk 1 operated by CMB.

The first 20 Metrobus started to enter service on cross-harbour routes in mid. of 1983 and the powertrain is the standard for KMB, a Gardner 6LXB engine coupled with Voith DIWA 851 fully automatic transmission. KMB soon took another delivery of 10 Metrobus with same configuration as the previous batch and commissioned in Sep., 1984, all of them was featured with transparent window instead of the light-blue coloured on the first batch. MCW awarded a purchasing order for 30 Metrobus then followed by another 20 in May, 1984 and a appearance was improved by fitting a larger front destination box. All but three still powered by Gardner engine and allocated on cross-harbour route 105 and 170, 12A and 40 serving the urban and route 59 running within the Tuen Mun New Town. Cummins engine was first seen in KMB fleet when M58 - 60 fitted with L10 engine and they were serving route 15A operated between Tsz Wan Shan and Lam Tin for trial. The total standees on the Cummins powered Metrobus was 19 in contrast to 20 on the standard Metrobus.

As the Albion EVK55CL deployed on route 51, running between Kam Tin and Tsuen Wan Ferry via Route TWISK, near the end of their useful service life and cope with the demand, KMB started to evaluate the feasibility of putting double deckers on route 51. The first double deckers serving route 51 was M21 (DC9306) which retrofitted with a Gardner 6LXDT engine from the unsuccessful Metrobus air-conditioned demonstrator DP1932, it was first deployed on route 51 on 18 Mar., 1988 and the result was considered satisfactory. To convert route 51 into full double deckers operation, KMB ordered it final batch of 8 2-axle Metrobus and first served route 51 since 5 Dec., 1989, they shared the same mechanical specification on the 3-axle Super Metrobus 11m, a 280hp version Cummins L10 engine with aftercooler and Voith DIWA 864G gearbox with manual retarder. Instead of the ventilation system, M81 - 88 were the only 2-axle double deckers fitted with light brown coloured window. It should be mentioned that they were the last MCW in Hong Kong, along with the Metrobus acquired by KCRC Bus Division after the closure of MCW due to financial difficulties.

The steep and winding road conditions of Route TWISK resulted in serious wear on the chassis of these Metrobus and the powerful driveline together with overloading made the situation even worse. M81 - 88 were then forced to withdraw from route 51 afterwards and converted back to standard mechanical configuration when allocated on other routes. KMB had to keep converting other early batch Metrobus as replacement until route 51 upgraded to full air- conditioned operation effective from 19 Oct., 1998.

When their roles played on the cross-harbour routes as well as other trunk services with high demand was taken over by the high capacity 3-axle double deckers, they were assigned on routes restricted by narrow road conditions. It was a common sight for Metrobus running on routes such as 2C, 5C, 7B, 8, 10, 11X, 18, 29M, 30, 31, 31M, 45, 46 and 77K etc.. It should be mentioned that some of the Metrobus on route 53, 64K and 70 were come from 51 with their gear for Route TWISK retained. M59 (DF4437) was the first Metrobus withdrawn after damaged by fire in 1991 while M58 (DF3520), 77 (DH921) and 85 (EH5919) were forced to retired between 1996 and 97 due to chassis failure during their service life on route 51. Another prematurely withdrawn member was M11 (CZ3920) with chassis damaged and beyond to repair after involving a traffic accident in 1997. M15 (CZ5944) was converted to the only 2-axle Metrobus training bus in 1997 and finally scrapped in 2001 after withdrawn from KMB Bus Captain Training School.

MCW Metrobus stared to retired since 2000 with the last 7 (M81 - 84, 86 -88) remained in the fleet until 2003. KMB mainly deployed them on route 29M, 94, 96R and 99 before their fully retirement, after full air- conditioned operation implemented on those routes serving Sai Kung, only one Metrobus needed for 29M until 30 Aug., 2003, when it was replaced by other air-conditioned double deckers. M83, 84 and 86 saw supporting route 11C, 16 and 95 during the new semester and finally, M-class Metrobus withdrawn from KMB fleet after 4 Sep., 2003. All but one Metrobus was scrapped except M2 (CZ1014) used as store room in Tseung Kwan O Depot until it closure in 2013.
