港鐵巴士為了替換隊中十八架一九九五年投入服務,配用Northern Counties車身的單層巴士(十五架富豪B10M及三架丹尼士飛鏢),於二零一零年十月招標購買十八架雙層巴士。有關投標結果於二零一一年三月十一日揭曉,由亞歷山大丹尼士奪得這份價值港幣五千五百多萬的合約,為港鐵巴士提供九架Enviro500及九架Enviro400。
亞歷山大丹尼士於二零零九至一零年先後運來三架Enviro400樣板巴士予香港試用,隨後並得到了城巴的訂單,相反對手富豪兩軸版本B9TL,直到目前為止仍未能於香港取得成功,只有兩架樣板車於道路上行走。說回港鐵巴士,當時車隊中的短陣雙層空調巴士,只有四十七架由新巴轉售的丹尼士三叉戟十點六米,並勝任絕大部份的港鐵巴士路線,唯有一個例外,就是往返流浮山及元朗東的K65路線,同時是最後一條未能於常規班次中,提供低地台巴士服務的港鐵巴士路線。
這裡有必要簡單介紹一下K65背景,K65前身是輕鐵接駁巴士655,一直以都城嘉慕都城型雙層巴士掛帥,直到空調化時換入單層的富豪B10M。港鐵巴士在買入三叉戟十點六米後,曾經安排這批巴士行走K65,可惜受制於屏夏路的環境,K65常規班次一直只能使用富豪B10M,偶爾出現三菱MK及丹尼士飛鏢。踏入二零一零年,這抋於一九九五年投入服務的富豪B10M已臨屆退役之年,需要尋找後繼車款接替其在K65的角色,就在亞歷山大丹尼士於二零一零六月交付第二部Enviro400樣板車予城巴時,港鐵便聯同亞歷山大丹尼士人員,一同把這架Enviro400駛到屏夏路作實地測試,這次試車結果令人滿意,從而令到亞歷山大丹尼士成功奪得九架Enviro400新車訂單。
作為本港第三個亞歷山大丹尼士Enviro400用家,港鐵訂購的Enviro400巴士車身佈局及外觀可說集合了九巴及城巴兩間公司的大成。首先港鐵這批量產型Enviro400新車,內部所配的座椅款式,理所當然地配用城巴量產版的Lazzerni Pratico座椅,亦即是港鐵巴士旗下飛鏢E200所選用的款式。至於Enviro400最富特色的車頭樹擋,港鐵跟城巴一樣保留下來,而下層太平門則跟樣板Enviro400一樣是採用全玻璃款式,傳統電子路線牌則採用Hanover產品,外觀上跟九巴樣板巴士如出一轍。全數港鐵Enviro400提供共七十個座位(上層四十七個及下層二十三個)及二十個企位。為向乘客提供資訊,港鐵Enviro400裝有全自動報站系統,更是港鐵巴士首款裝有同類系統之車型。
首批港鐵訂購的Enviro400底盤已經於二零一一年十月出廠,並隨即付運往珠海廣通車廠裝配車身,首架新車於二零一二年一月初運抵本港,餘下新車亦在之後時間陸續抵港,首兩架新車於二零一二年五月初出牌,獲編號140及141,這系列編號曾經用於九鐵巴士部成立之初,購入的二手都城嘉慕都城型上。在完成一系列測試及訓練,首架Enviro400 140(RJ7286)於二零一二年五月二十七日投入服務,首航K65路線。隨著餘下新車陸續於同年八月到九月間領牌,K65亦正式再一次步入全雙層巴士服務年代,除了K65,港鐵巴士亦安排Enviro400服務其他西鐵部路線。
港鐵巴士早於二零一五年五月公布票價調整細節時,向外界表示將會撥款增購十架雙層巴士作擴充車隊之用,當確定一切細節之後,最終有關新車訂單由亞歷山大丹尼士奪得,當中包括兩架Enviro400新車,儘管廠方早於二零一四年推出了Facelift版本車身,唯一如同一訂單中八架十一點三米版本Enviro500MMC新車一樣,為方便車身零件儲存,仍舊沿用舊款車身。兩架新車已於二零一八年三月下旬運抵屯門輕鐵車廠,並於六月下旬出牌,隨後於七月初投入服務。至於原先的九架Enviro400,亦自二零一八年一月開始,陸續換上Hanover橙色LED路線牌箱。
Alexander Dennis won a HKD 5.5millions tender of 18 double decker, 9 Enviro400 and 9 Enviro500 from MTR Bus on 31, Mar., 2011. The new bus mentioned before was as a replacement for those 18 single decker with Northern Counties bodyworks (15 Volvo B10M plus 3 Dennis Dart) entered service in 1995.
During 2009 and 2010, Alexander Dennis sent 3 Enviro400 demonstrators to Hong Kong for evaluation. After almost half an year of evaluation, Alexander Dennis successfully won a tender for 38 Enviro400 from City Bus. MTR Bus Division operated a fleet of 47 Dennis Trident 10.6m acquired from NWFB and almost all the routes they can work successfully except the normal service K65. Let's talk about a brief history of K65, it was route 655 before operation of the West Rail Line and served by MCW Metrobus double decker. After introduction of air-conditioned service, only single decker, mainly the Volvo B10M, can be deployed as the restriction imposed by the narrow condition of Ping Ha Road. Since the high profile of K65, Dennis Trident 10.6m was trial run on K65 but the result was unsatisfactory.
As the Volvo B10M on K65 near the end of their service, MTR Bus borrowed the second Enviro400 demonstrator of City Bus for test run along Ping Ha Road in Jun., 2010. The trial-run was satisfied and a purchasing order for 9 Enviro400 was resulted.
MTR Bus is the third Hong Kong bus operator to run Alexander Dennis Enviro400 and the layout together with their appearance can be considered as the combination of KMB and City Bus design. Lazzerni Pratico as seen on the production Enviro400 of City Bus and the Enviro200Dart in MTR Bus was fitted within the compartment of this batch of Enviro400 and the tree guard at the top front was retained while a single piece of toughened glass as the emergency exit at the lower deck as the KMB demonstrator. To go one step further, all Enviro400 fitted with traditional Hanover electronic display as on the demonstrator supplied to KMB. Total 90 passengers can be carried with 47 upper deck seatings and 23 lower deck seatings provided. Enviro400 is the first bus type in MTR Bus installed with automatic bus stop announcement system.
All Enviro400 chassis received their bodyworks in Zhuhai Guangtong Automobile Company Ltd and the first was delivered to Hong Kong in early Jan., 2012. The first two, were registered in early May, 2012 while the remaining Enviro400 were undergone delivery. All Enviro400s are classed as 140 - 148, a series used on the second-hand MCW Metrobus acquired by KCRC Bus Division when established. After completed all required tests and training, MTR Bus Enviro400 140 (RJ7286) first served route K65 on 27, May, 2012. K65 was subsequently converted to full double decker operation again after the remaining Enviro400 were licensed between Aug. and Sep., 2012. Instead of K65, Enviro400 also served other West Rail feeder service of MTR Bus.
As part of fleet expansion announced in 2015, a pair of Enviro400, 149 and 150, was delivered in Mar., 2018 and as ease for parts storage, instead of fitting the latest Facelift version bodywork, the old version bodywork as the first batch of Enviro400 was chosen. 149 and 150 were registered in early Jun., 2018 and commissioned in Jul., 2018. Moreover, MTR Bus started to replace the original route display fitted on the first batch of Envrio400 with the Hanover orange coloured LED route display since Jan., 2018.
