富豪B10M Volvo B10M

中置引擎巴士在香港巴士發展過程中,不論專利巴士還是非專利巴士部份,一直佔一個很少很少的比重。打從六十年代中華巴士引進一百架佳牌亞拉伯UF型,其後到九巴分別於七十年代及八十年代,引進兩架百福YRQ及一架富豪B10MD雙層樣板巴士,但終歸未能取得太大成功。中置引擎巴士再度於香港巿場出現,要到城巴於一九九零年引入富豪B10M為止。但可惜,再之後除了粵港及捷達巴士再引入共七架富豪B10M,及丹尼士標槍的樣板車之外,香港的中置引擎巴士就只有九鐵巴士部於一九九五年引進這批B10M,及較後時間兩架來自西安的城巴B10M和一家過境客車公司的富豪B12M。

時至今日,全港服役中採取中置引擎設計的巴士,除了那一架B12M外,恐怕只有這十五架現屬港鐵巴士部的富豪B10M。富豪B10M是車廠其中一款受歡迎產品,第一架富豪B10M於一九七九年面世,設計意念來自同廠B655及B58。B10M在全球廣受歡迎,不論用作城巿巴士還是用作客車,在亞洲地區中,B10M最成功的巿場莫過於新加坡。

一九九四年,當年九鐵巴士部的二手都城嘉慕都城型巴士到了退役之時,於是乎九鐵向英國訂購十八架配Northern Counties車身的單層巴士,當中十五個車身,選擇配於富豪B10M底盤上。全數十五架富豪B10M於九五年六月到八月抵港。比較當時城巴及捷達巴士的富豪B10M巴士,最大分別當然是車身,這款單門Northern Counties的Countybus Paladin車身,在英國十分流行,但在香港,除了同時期引進的丹尼士飛鏢外,就只有這批B10M選用。其次,城巴及捷達巴士的B10M是用於居民接送服務,即是屋村巴士的點到點服務,城巴那批更會應用於過境服務,對比九鐵的B10M,是用於城巿巴士的用途有所不同。

全數十五架B10M在英國完成車體裝嵌後,全長十一米,車內跟當時三菱MK中型巴士一樣,採用多企位佈局,載客量是八十八人,比較九巴的丹尼士長矛十一點七米巴士只能運載七十八位乘客,載客量還要多。雖然這款車身是單門設計,但車門設有高低梯級設計,有助分流進出車廂乘客。B10M採用了富豪THD102K引擎,空調系統是由德國超卓供應,由ZF波箱直接驅動,這跟當時大部份單層空調巴士如出一轍。當十五架B10M投入服務,主要被派往當時兩條連接屯門碼頭的特快巴士路線K1X及K2X,直到配Plaxton車身的富豪奧林比安十一米加入也仍然是這兩條路線骨幹成員。至於輔助巴士線A59在有空調巴士服務初期也曾出現B10M蹤影,而在空調巴士重現A59時,B10M更是常見的車款。至於在往返流浮山及元朗的接駁巴士服務,B10M憑藉高載客量及空調服務,全面提升有關服務水平。

從二零零七年十二月二日開始,隨著九鐵及地鐵合併成港鐵,全數富豪B10M轉由港鐵巴士部營運,並且仍然活躍於屯門,元朗及天水圍一帶,主要行走K53,K65,K68及K74,並在早上支援K52路線,以及於清晨時份行走員工專車,而已取消的輔助巴士線A73亦是B10M活躍的路線。二零零九年九月,港鐵巴士陸續替旗下巴士換上新色彩,401成為第三架換上新色彩的港鐵巴士。在巴士走向低地台發展趨勢下,新的中置引擎巴士恐怕不會再出現於專利巴士車隊中,而作為專利巴士車隊目前唯一一款中置引擎巴士,B10M有著一種跟後置引擎巴士與別不同的乘坐感覺。

踏入二零一二年,港鐵的富豪B10M亦步入晚年,413及415率先於三月底退役,並由二零一一年三月訂購的亞歷山大丹尼士Enviro400取代。原先最後一架港鐵富豪B10M行車証於二零一二年八月尾到期,但由於新車未能及時投入服務,故港鐵巴士替部份B10M續牌,但最終最後四架B10M於二零一二年十二月十二日退役,而在退役前富豪B10M主要於平日繁忙時間支援K51短途特別車,K53及K58。隨著港鐵的B10M巴士引退,這款富豪引以為傲的中置引擎巴士從此便絕跡於香港道路上。

Neither the franchised nor non-franchised sectors in the development history of Hong Kong buses, mid-engined bus models only takes a very small portion. Since the first mid-engined bus model Guy Arab UF introduced in 1960s by CMB. This was followed by only three more samples, 2 were Bedford YRQ and remaining was a Volvo B10MD, introduced by KMB between 1970s and 80s. Mid-engined bus can only achieve little success. City Bus introduced two batches of 10 Volvo B10M with Van Hool bodyworks for the residential and cross border services in 1990. Afterwards, total 24 Volvo B10M were introduced by Stagecoach, GDHK, City Bus and KCRC Bus Division from 1994 to 1997. Instead of those Volvo B10M, only two mid-engined coach served in Hong Kong which are Volvo B12M and a Dennis Javelin respectively.

Except the sole B12M, the only mid-engined bus model in Hong Kong was the B10M in MTR Bus Division. B10M is one of the successful model that launched in 1979. The idea of B10M was derived from the B655 and B58. It was welcomed by different operators all over the world as bus or coach and Singapore is the most successful market in Asia.

Looking back to Hong Kong, KCRC Bus Division placed an order of 18 single deckers with Northern Counties bodyworks to meet the withdrawn of second-hand MCW Metrobuses Mk I. 15 of them were fitted on Volvo B10M and arrived in Hong Kong between Jun. and Aug. 1995. The Countybus Paladin bodywork is popular in UK but rare in Hong Kong. Only those Dennis Darts in KMB and KCRC Bus Division fitted with the same bodyworks. The use of KCRC B10M was as a City Bus which different with City Bus and Stagecoach, as residential service or even cross border service.

All B10Ms are 11m in length and as the Mitsubishi MK midibuses, more standing was allowed with total capacity of 88. This figure is even more than the Dennis Lance 11.7m full-size single decker in KMB which only can carry 78 passengers. To facilitate the passengers flow in the single door designed bodywork, split entrance step was chosen. All B10Ms powered by Volvo THD102K and air-conditioning unit is Sutrak from Germany which direct driven by ZF gearbox. After the commissioned of these B10Ms, they were mainly served with K1X and K2X connected with Tuen Mun Pier Head and Long Ping and Tin Shui respectively. B10M also served with auxiliary bus service A59, and upgraded the service standard of the feeder service in Lau Fau Shan.

Volvo B10M still active in the MTR Bus Division after the merged of KCRC and MTR on 2, Dec. 07. MTR Bus Division started to repainted all MTR buses since Sept. 2009 and 401 is the third to be decorated with the new livery in the fleet. It was not surprised that no more mid-engined bus model will enter service in Hong Kong as the trend move into the super low floor era. It will be an enjoyable journey when taking a ride on this sole mid-engined bus model in the Hong Kong franchised bus fleet.

In Mar., 2011, MTR Bus tendered a batch of 18 double decker (9 Alexander Dennis Enviro400 and 9 Enviro500) to replace the aging Volvo B10M in the fleet and the first two (413 and 415) B10M were withdrawn from the fleet in the end of Mar., 2012. All Volvo B10Ms license supposed to be expired by the end of Aug., 2012, however, as the delay of new buses delivery, MTR Bus extended the license of some B10Ms for serving special trip of K51, K53 and K58 during weekdays rush hours. No more Volvo B10M on the road in Hong Kong after their full retirement on 12 Dec., 2012.
