富豪B6系中型巴士之出現,似乎是回應丹尼士飛鏢巴士在香港一枝獨秀的局面,但客觀事實卻是,富豪B6似乎未有對飛鏢構成了任何威脅,比對香港各大小巴士公司擁有飛鏢之數量,就只有城巴分批購入了六十一架B6系新車而已,足見其受歡迎程度遠遠不及飛鏢。
全港首架富豪B6系中型巴士是於一九九五年投入服務,型號為B6R(車隊編號1301),配上了由亞歷山大提供之Dash車身,空調系統來自德國超卓,動力來自廠方自家動力,搭配ZF全自動波箱,這亦成為隨後B6系的標準配置。1301在投入服務後被編往行走石排灣及銅鑼灣的76線行走,這架B6R不單是城巴專利車隊中首架單層空調巴士,同時也是全港唯一一架配亞歷山大Dash車身單層巴士及唯一一架富豪B6R巴士。
城巴隨後於一九九六年再次向富豪引進為數共十架B6系巴士,不過這次是低地台版本的B6LE,也同時是全港首批低地台巴士,而且採用了Plaxton
Pointer車身,外觀跟當時隊中的丹尼士飛鏢如出一轍。而在一九九七年,城巴再購入另一批為數十架B6LE巴士,不過車身卻是來自亞歷山大的ALX200,這批B6LE巴士同時改用了日本電裝供應之空調系統,以及於座位上方增設小型行李架。踏入一九九八年,繼續有富豪B6LE新車加入城巴車隊,並帶來不同的車身面貌。首十架於九八年初投入服務的新車(1322 - 1331),如早前引入的十點七米丹尼士飛鏢低地台巴士一樣,裝配了Plaxton
Pointer雙門版車身,同時空調系統亦恢復採用德國超卓出品。至於在同年年中投入服務,最後一批共三十架的B6LE(1332 - 1361)更採用了本地車身製造廠捷聯的出品,城巴當時表示此舉除了測試本地車身製造商之質素,更是為了於當時低迷經濟氣候下,增加本地勞動市場就業機會,捷聯車身的B6LE採用了德國Konvekta出品的空調系統,而Konvekta空調機其實早於一九九五年,已出現在一架全面翻新的城巴利蘭奧林比安客車(車隊編號105)上作試驗用途。
當所有B6LE投入服務後,它們可算走遍整個城巴網絡,配Plaxton車身的B6LE多被安排服務於12,41A,76,117及973路線,至於裝有亞歷山大ALX200車身的B6LE,主力行走往返赤柱及中環的260路線,以及間中行走服務鴨脷洲的95C循環線。最後由捷聯組裝車身的B6LE,出牌初期主要安排行走赤鱲角機場接駁路線,以取代原先的猛獅大型單層巴士,除了上述路線,B6LE曾經行走過的路線計有3B,11,12M,48,92,E11,M47及S52等等。
可惜的是,由於受到車隊限額的規限,加上大量猛獅大型單層巴士投入服務,以及需要替新到港的丹尼士三叉戟巴士出牌,載客量較低的B6成為繼飛鏢之後,被城巴放棄的一員,於二零零零年至零一年期間,陸續有B6被停牌及轉售,除了獨一無二的B6R,更加包括車隊編號1304及1305,以及全數ALX200及Plaxton
Pointer雙門車身B6LE,除了被運返英國,在Stagecoach不同的子公司繼續服務乘客外,十架配Plaxton
Pointer雙門車身的B6LE,則被運往紐西蘭,於當地的Stagecoach分公司服務乘客。在二零零一年,一架配捷聯車身的B6LE(車隊編號1355)被出售予中華巴士有限公司,成為該公司第一架以及唯一一架低地台巴士。至於在二零零三年初,所有餘下配Plaxton車身的富豪B6LE亦退出城巴車隊,並先行在車廠進行加設中門工程,再被運往Stagecoach於紐西蘭的分公司服務乘客,自此之後城巴車隊便只餘下裝配捷聯車身的B6LE。
畢竟B6LE載客量有限,未能適應客量需求大的路線,到了二零零五年第三季,城巴安排三架B6LE(1349 - 1351)轉往非專利部,接替退役的丹尼士飛鏢空缺外,更成為非專利部首批低地台巴士。隨著更多飛鏢退役,以及配合營運需要,非專利部再接收多六架B6LE(1334 - 1339),除了日常租賃外,主要用作行走沙田第一城及天水圍嘉湖山莊居民巴士路線。到了二零零七年六月,城巴將非專利部中的六架B6LE(1335 - 1339,1350)出售予嶼巴,用作後者擴充車隊,應付深圳灣路線開辦後的車務需要。另外,1334及1351兩架B6LE則曾於二零零八年一月開始租予海天碼頭,行走接駁機場管制區域及海天客運碼頭路線,直到有關租賃合約於翌年年底結束後,再次重返非專利部。
踏入二零一二年七月中,城巴開始接收來自中國的青年JNP6105GR,同時陸續淘汰服役於營運一部的富豪B6LE巴士,首架退役的是1345(HV5285),隨著全數青年巴士加投入服務後,富豪B6LE便於二零一二年十月之前退出營運一部車隊,從此港島區不會再見到披著城巴色彩的富豪單層巴士,在路面上接載乘客。至於屬營運二部及非專利部的富豪B6LE自二零一二年年底開始退役,最後一架服役於營運二部的B6LE(車隊編號1343)於二零一三年十一月二十七日退役,正式為B6車系於城巴十八年的營運生涯寫上一個休止符。
縱使富豪B6車系在香港未能像丹尼士飛鏢一樣,得到不同巴士公司之垂青,但無可否認是城巴透過B6為香港巴士帶來不少新意思,計有低地台巴士服務,多款前所未有之車身款式,以及全港首批低地台專利巴士由本地車身廠設計及裝嵌車身等等。
The appear of Volvo B6 series in
Hong Kong was seemed to response the monopolize of the Dennis Dart, however,
Volvo B6 was not causing much threat to Dart and only City Bus had placed an order
of 61 B6s, which is a very small number compared with the number of Dart operate
in different bus companies.
The first B6 series in Hong Kong is a B6R with Alexander Dash bodywork and entered service with City Bus in 1995 as 1301 and mainly serving route 76 running between Shek Pai Wan and Causeway Bay. This sole B6R not only is the first single decker in City Bus franchised sector but also the only single decker with Dash bodywork in Hong Kong. The bus was powered by engine from Volvo with ZF fully automatic transmission and set the standard for the B6LE afterwards, the compartment was air conditioned by Sutrak from Germany.
In 1996, City Bus
introduced it second batch of B6 series but B6LE was chosen this time, the first super low floor bus in Hong Kong. Total 10 B6LE was introduced and they were bodied by Plaxton with Pointer bodywork which already seen on the Dennis Dart acquired in 1995. A further batch of Volvo B6LE fitted with Alexander ALX200 bodywork and Nippon-Denso
air-con unit was delivered to City Bus in 1997, it should be mentioned that small luggage racks was provided above each seating. In 1998, we saw not only the largest but also the
last order of B6LE made by City Bus, among the order, Plaxton successfully supplied 10 Pointer dual doorways bodyworks on 1322 - 1331 and this batch of B6LE was air conditioned by Sutrak. To test the quality of local builder and support the labour market under the economic downturn in 1998, the final 30 B6LE chassis received their bodyworks at Jit Luen plant
and all of them were fitted with Konvekta
air-con unit after the trial on a Leyland Olympian coach (105) in 1995.
It was very easy to find B6LE within the City Bus networks after their commissioned, those Plaxton samples mainly serving route 12, 41A, 76, 117 and 973 while route 260 were serving with ALX200 bodyworks B6LE. The final batch of B6LE completed their bodyworks by Jit Luen first serving the shuttle service between the Airport as a replacement of the MAN NL262 and instead of the routes mentioned, B6LE also served different routes included 3B, 11, 12M, 48, 92, E11, M47 and S52 etc.
Unfortunately, Volvo B6LE becomes the another member to be abandoned after the Dennis Dart as a result of the restriction on the fleet size imposed by the Government. As the relatively low capacity of the medium-sized single decker, City Bus decided to give way to the MAN full-sized single decker and the Dennis Trident by selling the Dennis Dart and Volvo B6LE to different Stagecoach
subsidies between 2000 and 2001. The first batch of B6 to be sold including the B6R demonstrator 1301 and the entire fleet of B6LE with ALX200 bodyworks and Plaxton Pointer bodywork samples (1304, 1305 and 1322 - 1331). Instead of the Stagecoach subsidies in UK, Stagecoach New Zealand subsidies also received B6LE with dual doorways bodywork. The remaining Plaxton Pointer bodyworks B6LE were retired form the fleet in 2003 and after the conversion works to dual doorways, they found their new home in New Zealand with the subsidiary company of Stagecoach there.
None of the B6LE bodied by Jit Luen were sold to overseas and the first of the batch to be sold was 1355 (HV6755) which become the first and only super low floor bus in CMB since 2001. In 2005, 1349 -1351 were as a replacement of the Dennis Dart serving non-franchised sector acquired from NWFB, they are also the first batch of super low floor bus in non-franchised sector. To cope with the demand and the withdrawal of the Dennis Dart, six more B6LE (1334 -1339) joined the non-franchised sector and serving on the residential service of City One Shatin and Kingswood Villas or used on private hire duties. A batch of 6 non-franchised sector Volvo B6LE (1335 - 1339 and 1350) were sold to NLB in 2007 for the operation need after the launch of the Shenzhen Bay Port shuttle service. In addition, a pair of B6LE (1334 and 1351) were hired to Skypier between 2008 and 2009 for the shuttle service between Skypier and the restricted area within the Airport.
City Bus ordered a batch of 25 YoungMan JNP6105GR as a replacement of the aging B6LE in City Bus Operations Department One. The first Volvo B6LE retired from revenue service is 1345 (HV5285) in Jul., 2012 together with the first YoungMan delivered to City Bus. The scene of City Bus Volvo B6LE serving on the Island become a page of history after they were fully retired from Operations Department One in Oct., 2012. For those served with Operations Department Two and non-franchised sector, also started to withdraw from the road since the end of 2012 and the very last example 1343 (HV5003) was retired on 27 Nov., 2013.
It should be always remembered that super low floor bus service and the first local designed and build super low floor bus bodyworks was come with the Volvo B6LE.
