超級電容巴士是當今世界其中一款新能源公共交通工具,跟純電動巴士不一樣,除了於車廠進行充電外,超級電容巴士還可利用巴士停站時間,透過設於車站的架空充電設施進行快速充電,大大增強了巴士的續航能力。超級電容巴士需要透過頻密及快速充電,以確保巴士的續航能力,所以短途且經常停站上落客的路線,是營運超級電容巴士的首選。

九巴早於二零一零年七月試用一架,由上海申沃車廠生產的SWB6121SC超級電容巴士,該輛巴士為左方向駕駛,外觀跟上海市當時營運的巴士如出一轍。為宣傳九巴試用新能源巴士,這部申沃超級電容巴士被冠名gBus,並於車身上配以綠色竹林圖案。申沃超級電容巴士,最高時速達到每小時五十公里,而每次充滿電後可以行走約四至五公里路程。

在兩年之後,九巴再從另一中國廠家手上,接過另一架超級電容巴士gBus2,是次測試形號為青年的JNP6122UC,同樣是一架左軚樣板車,而且車身亦貼上綠葉圖案作裝飾。這部青年JNP6122UC外觀上跟嶼巴引進的JNP6122GR1相同,只是在車頂裝設了作充電用的集電弓。青年超級電容巴士在續航能力及最高時速方面,較申沃的產品來得優秀,充電完畢能夠行走八至十公里路程,而且最高車速度亦有每小時七十公里。

經過試驗兩款超級電容巴士之後,九巴在作出批量訂購以作試驗時,最終選擇了青年車廠的出品,購入八架JNP6122UC超級電容巴士,不過車身設計改用同期城巴引進的JNP6120GR採用的款式,只是在車頭裝有日行燈。首輛JNP6122UC於二零一五年抵港,經過一連串測試,檢收及驗車程序後,於八月登記出牌,編號AYM1,車牌TP7758,隨後再多兩架青年超級電容巴士登記出牌,全數由沙田車廠管理,以配合行走284路線作驗。

原先超級電容巴士試驗計劃是於二零一三年年底開始,但除了訂購及等候巴士付運需時,興建充電設施方面亦出現阻滯,故計劃一直有所延誤,最終經過一輪測試之後,九巴於二零一七年三月二十九日開始,安排兩架超級電容巴士,投入行走284線作載客測試。至於另一計劃作測試的5M路線,沿線暫時仍未興建充電設施,相信仍要待有關設施完成,才有望進行測試。

At present, one of the green public transport around the world is the super capacitor bus system and the feature of the system is the bus can not only be charged at the depot, but also conducted rapid charging at bus stops while commuters board or alight. The driving range of a Supercapacitor Bus is relied on rapid charging and discharging and as a result, it is most suitable for running on short-distanced service.

Backed to Jul.., 2010, KMB evaluated a Supercapacitor Bus from SUNWIN, Shanghai. The model of the prototype is SWB6121SC and is left-handed drive as the same model operated in Shanghai. KMB named this SUNWIN demonstrator as bus and decorated the body with the conceptual is es of "bamboo grove". The maximum speed of SUNWIN SWB6121SC is 50 km/h and can run continuously for 5 km with full charge.

After the trial of SUNWIN, another Supercapacitor Bus from YoungMan was tested in 2012 and named as gBus2. The model of gBus2 is left-handed drive JNP6122UC and with the same bodywork design as the JNP6122GR1 in NLB. As the bus, bus decorated with green leaf sticker to promote the "green transportation" concept to the public. Driving range of YoungMan JNP6122UC is stronger than the SUNWIN Supercapacitor Bus, it can run continuously for 8-10 km with full charge and the maximum speed is 70 km/h.

After the trials, YoungMan successfully won the tender of supplying 8 Supercapacitor Bus to KMB with the bodywork design applied on the City Bus JNP6120GR. The first of the batch was delivered in Jan., 2015 and registered as TP7758, fleet number classed as AYM1, in Aug., 2015. Two more JNP6122UC were registered afterwards and all of them stationed at Sha Tin Depot for evaluation on route 284.

As it needs time for the tender process and delivery, together with the delay in construction of the charging station, testing of the Supercapacitor Bus was delayed and finally KMB arranged 2 YoungMan Supercapacitor Bus on route 284 for testing since 29 Mar., 2017.
