當各家以市區作根據地的專營巴士公司，透過政府資助引進電動巴士作測試營運，以大嶼山為基地的新大嶼山巴士，同樣得到政府資助，購買四架電動巴士作營運測試，當中兩架新車訂單，由比亞迪成功奪得。比亞迪為嶼巴提供的新車型號為K9R，與本港其他公司營運的比亞迪電動巴士一樣，嶼巴的新車全長十一點七米，合共提供三十一個座位及四十個企位，比對新巴及城巴的同型號巴士，可多容納三個企位乘客。至於嶼巴比亞迪K9R配備的空調系統，以及電子路線牌箱都是本港單層空調巴士的標準，分別由日本電裝及Hanover提供。
首架嶼巴比亞迪K9R於二零一六年九月抵港，並曾於同年十一月運往澳門，參加第六屆中國(澳門)國際汽車博覽會。儘管隨後嶼巴比亞迪獲安排前往驗車，但未有立即出牌，直到二零一八年年初，兩架比亞迪K9R再度前往運輸署驗車中心進行驗車，並於同年四月四日出牌，登記車牌為VJ7769及VJ8144。值得一提是，原車牌VJ8144的比亞迪電動巴士，於出牌短時間後被更換另一個車牌VK2668。
直到二零一八年五月底為止，嶼巴比亞迪仍然未有派出服務乘客，日常主要於東涌市中心及逸東邨一帶作車長訓練，或者停泊於東涌市中心巴士總站。二零一八年五月九日，嶼巴再次招標購買兩部超低地台電動單層巴士及充電系统，以替代早前訂購但一直未有付運的華廈神龍電動巴士，比亞迪能否再下一城奪取相關訂單，就有待下回分解。
嶼巴於二零一八年七月二十五日開始，安排比亞迪電動巴士行走38路線，正式開始相關載客測試。
NLB tendered a batch of 4 electric single decker for revenue evaluation under the HKSAR Government sponsorship and two of them were the K9R from BYD, the model already seen in other franchised bus operators in Hong Kong. The overall length of the BYD K9R is 11.8m and total 71 passengers with 40 standees can be carried. The air conditioning unit and electronic route display provided by Nippon Denso and Hanover respectively, both were the standard in the Hong Kong franchised bus market.
The first NLB BYD K9R arrived in Sep., 2016 and participated the 2016 China (Macau) International Automobile Exposition in Nov., 2016. Both NLB K9R not yet receive any registration even the vehicle examination already completed. Finally, they were registered as VJ7769 and VJ8144 respectively on 4 Apr., 2018 after undergone the second time of vehicle examination. One thing should be mentioned, the registration number of VJ7769 was changed to VK2668 later.
Instead of used on driver training along Tung Chung Centre and Yat Tung Estate, it was a common scene for the BYD electric bus taking rest at the Tung Chung Centre Terminus and until the end of May, 2018, they were not yet enter service on route 38 for evaluation. NLB acquired another 2 electric bus and the related facilities on 9 May, 2018 after the cancellation of the purchasing order for a pair of GDEV electric bus as a result of the delivery failure. Time is needed to see whether BYD can once again gain the order from NLB.
The revenue evaluation of the BYD electric bus started on 25 Jul., 2018 and the pair of BYD were put on route 38 serving commuters.
