Dennis Trident

編號 Class:701 - 747

After Stagecoach sold all the City Bus shares to Chow Tai Fook Enterprise which was holding NWFB on 9 Jun., 2003, relationships of City Bus and NWFB were changed from competitors to sister company and a series of routes rationalisation was carried out to optimize the operational efficiency. During the rationalisation, there were surplus buses in NWFB fleet and hence, some of them were sold in the market since 2003 and a batch of 30 Alexander ALX500 bodied Dennis Trident 10.6m was sold to KCRC Bus Division in the end of 2004. One thing should be mentioned, a batch of NWFB Leyland / Volvo Olympian was on loan to KCRC Bus Division for the feeder service in the North-west New Territories.

After the commissioned of the West Rail, both Light Rail and feeder bus service cannot live up with the commuters expectation due to the underestimated of the demand and further service adjustments were implemented. In short terms, shortage of fleet can be solved by hiring buses from NWFB, however, there were still a need for introduced more buses for KCRC Bus Division especially when the Metrobus reached the end of their useful service life. As brand new buses cannot be delivered within short period of time and NWFB decided to sell surplus bus in the fleet made the Dennis Trident 10.6m immediately available to KCRC and hence, they were acquired in the end of 2004.

KCRC Bus Division already operated a fleet which consisted of 22 Dennis Trident 11.3m with modified ALX500 bodyworks from Walter Alexander since mid. of 2000. Compared with the first-hand Trident in the fleet, matt black glazing staircase panel can be found on the Trident acquired from NWFB while the 11.3m variant, aluminum sheet staircase panel was chosen. In addition, as mentioned before, modified version ALX500 bodywork was fitted on Trident 11.3m while those second-hand members were fitted with an earlier version ALX500 bodywork and this can be identified much easily when viewing from the rear.

The first batch Dennis Trident to be sold to KCRC was withdrawn from NWFB fleet since Nov., 2004 and the mobile multi-media unit was removed. Several of the batch included ex-NWFB 1601, now as KCR 701(JC6299) repainted with standard KCRC Bus Division livery before delivery. Due to lack of preparation time, some of the batch retained with the NWFB livery and some even with the commercial banner advertisement when entering service in mid. of Dec., 2004. They were first deployed on routes serving Tuen Mun like 506, K51 and K52 and later route K73 serving Tin Shui Wai when more Trident delivered from NWFB. Started from the end of Dec., 2004, 713 - 718 were deployed on the feeder service linking Tai Po Market Station which become the first super low floor bus serving the East Rail passengers. Both 720 (JC9219) and 729 (JE9381) were the first batch of KCRC bus with rear-circuit television to cater the operation need of K66 serving Tai Tong and except the Metrobus, Leyland Olympian and Mitsubishi MK, rear-circuit television were later installed on all buses in the fleet.

Further acquirement of Dennis Trident from NWFB were made in 2005 to cope with the amendment of LRT and related feeder service networks together with fleet upgrade programme. The first purchased order included 12 Dennis Trident 10.6m and they were commissioned with KCRC Bus Division in Mar., 2005 with the last two deployed on the East Rail feeder service. The last 5 Dennis Trident were delivered in Sep., 2005 along with 6 Dennis Trident 11.3m from NWFB and only 745 (JD1834) was assigned on the East Rail feeder service. As the first batch of the second-hand Dennis Trident, some of the were entered service with the standard NWFB livery.

As KCRC were merged into MTR on 2, Dec. 2007, all buses of KCRC Bus Division including the Dennis Trident were transferred to MTR Bus Division and a KCRC logo was replaced with the MTR Logo on the buses running in the North-west New Territories. When West Rail extended the Kowloon sided terminus to Hung Hom on 16 Aug., 2009, feeder service K16 operated between Hung Hom and Nam Cheong was finally withdrawn from service one month later and as number of buses was more than the operation need, all Dennis Trident 10.6m running on East Rail feeder service were transferred to West Rail section.

Starting from mid. of 2009, MTR bus introduced a new colour scheme and 743(JC5627) was the first Dennis Trident 10.6m received the new livery and to be the fourth repainted with the new livery in MTR Bus fleet. 747 (JC4903) not only the last Trident 10.6m in the fleet bus also the last to be repainted and further compartment refurbishment was carried out on the Trident to upgrade service standard and meet operation need.

MTR Bus started to dispose Dennis Trident 10.6m from NWFB since 2015 and the first to be withdrawn was 737 (JD1982) which delicensed on 5 Mar., 2015. 719 (JC8013) and 723 (JD1704) were the last two stayed with MTR Bus, they were backed to Tuen Mun depot after supporting duties in the morning rush hours on 16 Dec., 2016 and indicated the fully retirement of Dennis Trident 10.6m. The role they played on different feeder routes linking Light Rail and West Rail was replaced by Alexander Dennis Enviro500MMC and the Volvo B9TL.
