丹拿/利蘭Fleetline的故事該如何說起?在七十年代,面對海底隧道通車所帶來的巨大客量增長,對當年中巴車隊帶來莫大壓力,而面對英國廠家停止生產前置引擎巴士,以致未能一時間購買更多新巴士應付需要。為此,中巴終於在一九七二年作出一個大膽決定,購入全港首架後置引擎巴士丹拿Fleetline,配用Metal Sections車身,編號RLX1,全長三十呎,隨後引進更多Fleetline時,改為SF1 。新巴士隨後被投放到海底隧道路線行走。在當時來說,Fleetline稱得上是最先進的車款,亦由於低矮的底盤結構,造就了一個不設梯級的登車地台。

為了應付不斷上升之客量,中巴決定購入更多Fleetline,合共購進三百零五架長三十三呎(LF)及三十架三十呎長(SF)新車。由於載客量高,所以新巴士被冠以珍寶巴士稱號,而珍寶巴士這名字更較Fleetline為人認識。在車身配搭方面,LF1-106由Metal Sections供應,LF107-305及SF2-31全數配用亞歷山大車身。當中LF106配用改良版Metal Sections車身,而隨後有一批配Metal Sections車身因火警,交通意外及其他原因而翻裝亞歷山大車身。當新巴士投入服務後,LF憑著能夠運載百多人而編往海底隧道路線,SF則主要編往山頂路線。在得到中巴悉心保養之下,珍寶巴士一直發揮良好表現,替中巴帶來豐厚的收入。可惜,在九十年代,巿民對巴士服務質素不斷提高,加上中巴未能完全滿足乘客需要,在經過兩次削減路線網絡後,最終在一九九八年被運輸處終止專營權。當中八十八條路線,由新巴投得,並於同年九月一日開始服務巿民。為了能夠於短時間提供可靠服務,新巴決定購入大部份中巴車隊,當中包括七十二架LF及28架SF。珍寶巴士在新巴中明顯是扮演過渡角色,當中LF更於一九九九年全數退役,SF則於二零零零年在十點三米三叉戟抵港後,從山頂路線中退下火線。當中部份SF服役於新巴,曾被鬆上新巴標準色彩服務乘客。

時至今日,新巴仍然保留一架珍寶巴士(SF15)作為巡迴於各個總站,收集員工意見。而SF31則由一位英國巴士迷購入,運回英國收藏。

The story of Daimler/Leyland Fleetline should be began in this way. In 1970s, after the commenced of cross-harbour Tunnel, the dramatic increased of passenger flow brought a great pressure on CMB fleet. The only solution to this problem was introduced more buses, however, since the closure of production of front-engined bus model, this increase the degree of difficulty of solving the problem. CMB made a significant decision in 1972, introduced the first rear-engined double decker, Daimler Fleetline, bodied by Metal Sections and the overall length is 30ft. It was classed as RLX1 and later re-numbered as SF1. RLX1 was deployed on cross-harbour Tunnel route so as to upgrade the service standard. There is a step-free entrance resulted from the low frame chassis design.

To cope with the continuous increase demand, CMB ordered more Fleetline and finally, 305 33ft long wheel-based (LF) and 30 30ft Fleetline (SF) were ordered. LF mainly deployed on cross-harbour routes and trunk routes, SF were deployed on the route serving the Peak. As they had the highest passenger capacity at that time, they were labeled as 'Jumbo' and this nickname is much popular than the name of Fleetline. LF1-106 were bodied by Metal Sections while the remaining were bodied by Walter Alexander. Some of the Fleetline fitted with Metal Sections bodyworks were re-bodied with Walter Alexander bodies after serious accident or fire damaged.

All Fleetline had a satisfactory performance under the good maintenance by CMB and appreciable revenue was resulted. However, as people would like to have a higher service standard in 1990s and CMB was failed to do so. After twice reductions of the network, Transport department decided to terminate the franchised of CMB and after the process of tender, NWFB was successfully acquired the franchise of operating 88 bus routes from CMB. To ensure the stable and reliable service can be provided within a short period of time, NWFB bought buses from CMB including 72 LFs and 28 SFs. Fleetline played a transition role in NWFB. All LF were withdrawn in 1999 while SF were replaced by 10.3m Dennis Trident in 2000. It should be mentioned that some SF were painted with standard NWFB livery.

At present, there are two Fleetlines from NWFB preserved. SF15 was converted as a Staff Communication Bus to collect staff advice at different terminus regularly. SF31 is preserved by a bus enthusiast in UK.
