二零一一年九月,香港特區政府財政司司長曾俊華先生透過個人網誌,披露了國內車廠比亞迪,會提供一架K9型全電動巴士予九巴試用半年,而這架樣板巴士除了作廣泛路面測試,更會裝配上由APAS、香港生產力促進局和香港應用科技研究院的研發配件,包括:車輛安全和乘客信息服務系統、長身車輛無線倒車監視系統,和輪胎壓力監測系統。
而在同年十月尾,2011國際環保展覽於亞洲博覽館舉行,作為其中一個參展商,比亞迪除了安排兩架電動的士,亦從深圳巴士集團借來一架K9電動巴士,除了作為展品外,更重要於二零一一年十月二十九日,於早上到中午時間,安排作穿梭東涌鐵路站的穿梭巴士,除了給予公眾機會試坐,亦可借此作一個實地測試。比亞迪K9電動巴士早已經於深圳大運會舉行期間,大量投入深圳巴士集團運作。由於來港的比亞迪K9巴士是屬於深巴士集團所有,加上是左駕駛室設計,所以展覽完畢後,巴士被駛回深圳服務當地巿民。故事當然未有就此完結,比亞迪繼續跟九巴密切聯絡,並到港了解九巴要求,改進現有K9巴士設計,務求更能切合香港營運環境需要。
經過差不多一年時間,一架披有九巴標準香檳色色彩的電動巴士,於二零一二年九月抵港,這就是比亞迪供應予九巴的電動巴士樣板車,型號為K9D,跟早年來港測試的K9巴士,外觀上有些微差異,而且是右駕駛室設計,至於車廂內的電池擺放位置,亦有所修改,以符合本港相關驗車及營運要求。
經過兩個多月時間驗收及準備,這架比亞迪電動巴士獲發行車牌照,車牌編號及車隊編號分別為RV8143及BE1,隸屬荔枝角車廠,但出牌後只是在車廠外圍測試。到了四月中旬,九巴將這架電動巴士作廣泛路試,試行路線計有5C,6C及603等,而於五月二日開始,BE1被安排派出行走往返荔枝角車廠的員工巴士。值得留意是,BE1在行走員工巴士時,車身兩旁未有任何九巴商標。
經過四個月測試後,九巴進一步擴展測試範圍及時間,安排比亞迪電動巴士於平日上下午繁忙時間行走2號路線,為隆重其事,除了將電動巴士披上「ebus」色彩,更於二零一三年九月九日於尖沙咀碼頭巴士總站舉行啟行儀式。有關載客測知於一個月後結束,之後BE1一直留在車廠未有再派出行走,直到同年十二月,九巴將BE1除牌及退還比亞迪,期後車廠曾於翌年四月舉辦的中國國際新能源汽車展中,安排這輛樣板巴士作為展品。
The Financial Secretary of the HKSAR Government, Mr. John C Tsang stated in his personal blog in Sep., 2011, BYD, a car manufacturer in China, would supply a demonstrator of their K9 electric bus to KMB for carrying out a 6-months evaluation. To go one step further, vehicle safety and passengers information system, reversing monitoring system for the long vehicles and tyre pressure monitoring system developed by APAS, the Hong Kong Productivity Council and Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute would also tested on this demonstrator.
ECO Expo Asia 2011 was took place at the Asia Expo in the end of Oct., 2011, as one of the participant, BYD exhibited a pair of electric taxi and a K9 electric bus borrowed from Shenzhen Bus Group. The K9 electric bus is left-hand drive and already served the commuters in Shenzhen since the opening of the Universiade. Instead of showing to the general public, BYD also arranged this electric bus running between the Asia Expo and Tung Chung Railway Station as free shuttle bus and gathered useful operation data. BYD kept a close contact with KMB to know their requirement to improve the existing K9-series electric bus for the use in Hong Kong.
A demonstrator painted with KMB standard champagne livery was delivered to KMB in Sep., 2012. The model of this demonstrator is K9A and had a slightly different outlook of the K9 electric bus. This K9D prototype was right-hand drive and the location of the battery was revised to suit the operation environment in Hong Kong.
The BYD K9D prototype was registered on 14 Jan., 2013 as RV8143 with BE1 as it fleet number. At the early stage of registration, BE1 only test run around Lai Chi Kok Depot until mid. of Apr., 2013, KMB arranged test run on different route liked 5C, 6C and 603, etc.. BE1 started operating on staff shuttle between Lai Chi Kok Depot and Yuet Lun Street since 2 May, 2013 and there was no any KMB logo on both side of BE1.
KMB deployed this BYD K9D on route 2, running between So Uk and Star Ferry for testing on revenue service. There was a kick-off ceremony held at Star Ferry Bus Terminus on the morning of 9 Sep., 2013 and the first trip was started at the afternoon on the same day. When BE1 worked on route 2, it is decorated with a special "ebus" livery. The trial run on route 2 was completed one month later and the bus was stored in the depot until delicensed in Dec., 2013and returned to BYD. This demonstrator was used as an exhibit in the CINEV Show held in Apr., 2014.
