近年全球各國積極控制碳排放,務求盡早達至碳中和以應對日益嚴重全球暖化問題,其中一個常見措拖是公共交通電動化,過往常見的傳統柴油引擎驅動巴士漸漸由全電動巴士所取代。九巴繼早年透過環保處綠色運輸試驗基金,向比亞迪購買K9R電動巴士之後,再於二零二零年八月招標採購電動單層巴士,成為首間專營巴士公司自資批量購買電動巴士。經過相關投標程序,最終比亞迪再次成功奪得相關合約為九巴提供十六架B12A電動巴士。

嚴格而言B12A是第三款出現於九巴車隊的比亞迪產品,早於二零一二年九月比亞迪已經向九巴提供一架K9D電動巴士樣板車,並於二零一三年五月開始先後行走荔枝角車廠員工巴士及往返蘇屋及尖沙咀碼頭的2號線作實際測試,最終這架比亞迪K9D未有留在九巴車隊,在完成試驗之後退回代理商。直到政府透過綠色運輸試驗基金向運輸業界發放資助購買新能源車輛作測試時,九巴於二零一四至一五年間招標採購電動巴士時,向比亞迪招手引進十四架K9R電動巴士,當中四架交由龍運巴士負責營運測試。比亞迪B12A在若干細節上都與早年的K9R有所分別,首先車身選擇上,九巴當時委託馬來西亞順豐替K9R設計及組裝車身,這次引進的B12A車身則如K9D樣板巴士一樣使用比亞迪自家設計的車身,在外觀上亦較早年的設計更富時代感。至於驅動電動巴士行駛的電池,亦由K9R時安放於駕駛室之後改為放在車頂,進一步改善車廂空間,從而令載客量由K9R時的七十人提升至八十一人(三十三個座位及四十八人企位)。比亞迪B12A配備了電池管理系統及水冷系統,分別透過監察電池效能及狀態,以及有效地管理電池溫度,從而令電池壽命及效能都有所延長及提升,只需一小時四十分便可以完全充電,比較早年的K9R快兩小時,而完全充電之後可以行走二百公里路程。此外亦如其他九巴新車一樣,乘客可以享用免費5G Wi-Fi上網服務,同時全車座位均配備安全帶,加上配備電子穩定系統,進一步提升行車安全。至於車廂空調系統方面,九巴首次採用國產松芝空調,而最新標準的Hanover白光LED電子路線牌,以及落車門上的動態乘客資訊系統,亦有一一應用於比亞迪B12A新車上。

九巴的比亞迪B12A新車相片早於二零二一年五月流傳於互聯網上,當時新車車身顏色主要以紅色及白色為主調,切合九巴「城市脈搏」的企業形象。但全數新車在稍後時間被改成以「電光綠」車身顏色示人,而首架帶有「電光綠」車身色彩的比亞迪B12A新車亦於同年七月二十二日運抵本港,交付代理地勤設備工程有限公司,並於抵港翌日於機場島一帶試車。隨著其他新車陸續到埗及在完成相關出牌前程序後,九巴於二零二二年一月二十七日向公眾表示,新一代電巴預期於農曆年後投入服務,同時與中電携手合作,進一步推動電動巴士發展。首架B12A新車BEB1終於於二零二二年二月八日獲發XV5838車牌號碼,並且隨後被安排用作車長訓練之用。受到第五波新冠疫情影響,比亞迪電動巴士投入服務日期一再延遲,九巴最終於四月二十五日下午安排首架比亞迪B12A新車,投入行走往返荔枝角及尖沙咀碼頭的6號線,並且在當天較早時間於尖沙咀碼頭舉行啟行儀式。隨著其餘十五架新車陸續登記出牌加入九巴車隊,它們迅即被安排行走九龍市區路線,計有途經彌敦道的1,1A及203C,以及觀塘區的11D及14B線。

Implementation of Green Public Transport was one of the solutions against global warming and to achieve carbon neutral and the diesel-powered buses were gradually replaced by electric buses. In Hong Kong, KMB tendered for another batch of battery-powered electric single decker in Aug., 2020 without any support from the HKSAR Government as the purchased of BYD K9R in 2014. BYD was successfully won the tender and supplying a batch of 16 B12A electric bus to KMB.

KMB already operated a fleet of BYD K9R since 2017 and backed to 2013, a sole BYD K9D demonstrator was evaluated on route 2 running between So Uk and Star Ferry. All BYD B12A were completely built up at BYD plant in Hangzhou in contrast to K9R chassis built in Hangzhou and bodied by Gemilang in Malaysia. The batteries were relocated to the roof on B12A and hence the compartment can accommodate 33 seatings passengers and 48 standees, a 16% more than BYD K9R. Efficiency and the life cycle of the battery was enhanced and extended with the help of the Battery Management System and Water Cooling System. The duration for fully charged of B12A only took 1 hour and 40 minutes which was 2 hours faster than K9R and  driving range of each B12A was 200km after fully charged. Passengers can enjoy free 5G Wi-Fi internet connection services during their journey as other new buses in the fleet. As a safety features, seat belts were fitted on every seat and Electronic Stability Programme was equipped. Air conditioning unit of BYD B12A was supplied by SONGZ from the mainland instead of the common Denso unit in the fleet. The standard Hanover white coloured LED route display and dynamic passenger information panel can also seen on the BYD B12A.

The "Heartbeat of the City Red" livery was first seen on the BYD B12A but later changed to the "Electric Green" livery. The first of the batch was arrived in Hong Kong on 22 Jul., 2021 and trial run around the airport on the following day. During the press release held on 27 Jan., 2022, KMB announced that BYD B12A would be entered service after the Chinese Lunar New Year and worked together with China Light Power to promote the development of electric bus in Hong Kong. BEB1 was first registered on 8 Feb., 2022 as XV5838 and mainly used for driver training before put on the revenue service. The commission date of the electric bus was delayed due to the fifth wave of epidemic of the COVID-19 and finally BEB1 was first entered service on route 6 in the afternoon of 25 Apr., 2022 after a ceremony held earlier that day at Star Ferry. KMB further deployed the B12A on routes serving along Nathan Road corridor and Kwun Tong District like 1, 1A, 11D, 14B and 203C afterwards.
