丹尼士三叉戟十點三米 Dennis Trident 10.3m
Still remember which bus model was the backbone of The Peak routes 15 and 15B? Yes, the answer is short wheel-based Daimler Fleetline. As NWFB taken over the franchised from CMB, full air-conditioned fleet would be the goal and the Fleetline would be replaced by the new, super low-floor and air-conditioned buses. As a very high demand of The Peak routes made Dennis Dart cannot satisfy, to go one step further, the headroom of the Mount Kellett Road Bridge only allow buses with low-bridge body passing through. Thus, no existing air-conditioned double-decker can be deployed on The Peak routes. To solve the problem, NWFB jointly worked with Dennis and a new member of the Trident family was born, the 10.3m Trident and won an order of 40 units.
The 10.3m Dennis Trident is the last bus type of the first 500 new buses joined into the NWFB fleet. As a result, the short wheel-based Daimler Fleetline can have a longer service life than the long wheel-based Daimler Fleetline. The 10.3m Dennis Trident not only the shortest Trident in Hong Kong but also featured with a overall height of 4.17m Duple Metsec DM5000 bodywork. This made them can cope with the headroom of the Mount Kellett Road Bridge. As they are fitted with a low-bridge bodyworks, the rear route indicator box was relocated on the top of the upper deck window. This is a distinct characteristic from other Duple Metsec bodyworks Trident. Since shorter front overhang parts was chosen, the entrance is much narrow than other super low floor bus and the wheelchair ramp is located at the exit. The specification of the 10.3m Trident are same as other members of the Trident family. All 10.3m Tridents mainly served Shek O, Stanley and The Peak routes. As they have high flexibility and high capacity, they can suitable for most routes operated by NWFB.
The first batch of 40 10.3m Trident received their bodyworks in two places. First batch of 20 (3301-3340) were assembled in Northern Counties plants in England while the remaining 20 were assembled in Hong Kong. Some of them were fitted with tree bumper at the early stage but were removed later. They are the first batch of buses fitted with electronic periscope in NWFB fleet. At the early stage of their service, they were classed as 33xxL which the letter "L" may mean they are low bridge buses but in 2002, this letter "L" was disappeared. 3301 was used to promote the commissioned of 10.3m Trident and 3340 is the 500th new member of NWFB.
To increase the carrying capacity of the fleet and replaced those Dennis Darts (DC) purchased from CMB, NWFB ordered a further 20 10.3m Trident in 2002. This batch of Tridents are fitted with Euro 3 emission standard Cummins ISE series engine. The rear braking lights were changed to circular in shape. All of them were entered service in mid of 2002 and they are the last batch of buses fitted with Duple Metsec bodyworks in Hong Kong after Duple Metsec become a member of Transbus International.
